The National Rodeo Council of Australia founded the Australian Rodeo Queen Quest Inc. (formerly known as National Rodeo Queen Quest of Australia) in 1992 after recognizing the need to promote and encourage young women into the heritage sport of Rodeo.
The Queen Quest is an annual competition providing education about the sport to contestants via regular correspondence and promotions prior to the final week of judging. Many past contestants have continued their association with the competition and freely offer advice to the new queens to help guide them throughout the year.
The Australian Rodeo Queen Quest is a voluntary run, not for profit organization, with all proceeds put back into the quest to promote the sport of rodeo. A rulebook has been formulated and is strictly adhered to by all contestants clearly outlining the Rodeo Queen’s duties and obligations during her reign.
After meeting the basic criteria, contestants spend a fun filled week on the Gold Coast where they are educated about their duties while they participate in a number of activities to promote rodeo including promotions at many of the local attractions and major theme parks.
An independent panel of judges are selected each year to judge the contestants, comprising of civic leaders, rodeo personnel and business people to assist the girls during the week in preparation for the final night judging.
Judging points are tallied from the week and completed on the final night with a final tally overall determining who will be the Australian Rodeo Queen. The major prize includes a whirlwind 21-day overseas trip, which includes all airfares, accommodation and transport to the Calgary Stampede in Canada, Dallas Fort Worth, Denver, Cheyenne Frontier Days and LA in the US.
The Quest provides rural women with a fantastic opportunity to not only promote the sport they love but has also proven to be a great confidence builder for these young ladies and in many instances has opened the door to many other new possibilities.
